Spending time together builds healthy families, healthy kids, and connections that run deep. Prioritizing health and fitness as a family can create healthy habits to last a lifetime. Hannah Hoffman, PHP Wellness Coordinator, shares a few ideas to get your family active, together!
Ride Bikes
A family bike ride is a classic example of a fun, family activity. Bike rides get everyone moving and are a great workout, no matter what your age may be.
Cook Together
Start the week by letting each member of the family choose something they would like to have for dinner. Then get everyone involved with the shopping and meal prep. Even the little ones can help by measuring, pouring, or stirring. Getting the entire family involved may prove to be a bit messy and take a little longer, but remember, it is about the time spent together.
Take a Trip to Your Local Farmer’s Market
Give everyone a small allowance to spend on healthy foods. Introduce the kids to a new fruit or vegetable, while allowing them to use budgeting skills at the same time. Get the ingredients you need to make a healthy meal later that day.
Make Smoothies or Popsicles
Provide a variety of fruit and veggies along with juice or almond milk, and start blending! Mashed up fruit and juice can also make delicious popsicles for a healthy, cool snack on a hot day.
Take A Hike
Get exercise, fresh air, and explore nature – all at the same time! Don’t forget to bring plenty of water and healthy snacks.
Sidewalk Chalk
Offer hours of entertainment and encourage creativity with sidewalk chalk! Create art, draw hopscotch or four square games, and let the rain wash it all away.
Head to the Park
Grab a Frisbee, ball, kite, and a picnic lunch and head to the park. Let the kids help choose and prepare healthy foods for the picnic lunch. While you are there, go explore the playground. Slides, ladders and tunnels are great activities for kids. Adults can even do their own playground workout!
Have A Dance Party
Turn on your favorite music (or let everyone take turns picking a song) and just move! Let the kids teach you the latest dance moves and share a few of your own from back in your day.
