No One is Turned Away
Since 1993, Super Shot has been ensuring the health of the most vulnerable children in our community by providing life-saving immunizations. Super Shot breaks down the barriers of vaccination—access and cost—and increases awareness of the importance of vaccination though the availability of four walk-in clinics and through community education.
Super Shot provides vaccines for 15 preventable diseases and the flu for children and 14 adult vaccines. The organization works tirelessly to educate and inform parents, hospital staff, school nurses, childcare providers, and not-for-profits of the importance of keeping children up to date with immunization to raise the immunization rate in our community for greater public health. Super Shot is the leading provider of vaccinations to children in Allen County and the second largest vaccine provider in the state.
While immunizations are always important, the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of vaccines in preventing potentially devastating illness in families and communities. Due to COVID-19, the need for Super Shot’s services is greater than ever and will continue to be until a COVID-19 vaccine is widely available. Many families are facing economic and healthcare challenges due to the pandemic. Super Shot is providing immunizations to these families daily and turning no one away for inability to pay.
Special Challenges of COVID-19
Since March, Super Shot has responded quickly to the changing needs of our community. They temporarily took over all immunization services for the Allen County Department of Health (DOH) so the Department could focus solely on the COVID-19 response. During the “stay-at-home” orders, Super Shot was one of the few points of access for immunizations for infants and children as primary care providers and pediatricians had to move to telehealth appointments. Because of limited access, fear, and a lack of awareness, many children have fallen behind in receiving immunizations putting them at risk for potentially deadly diseases. Getting children caught back up on their immunization schedule is a challenge for Super Shot and our entire community.
Consolidating Services to Maintain Individual Safety
Super Shot has had to implement many process changes to safely serve the community due to the pandemic. Super Shot consolidated services to the Hobson clinic location and moved from “walk-in” services to “appointments only” to ensure social distancing and screening. They also implemented increased cleaning and PPE protocols. These changes have required increased staff, time, and technology for the agency but ensures families are being served in a safe manner which helps alleviate fears and concern for infection.
Super Shot also partnered in 2020 with local school systems and non-profit agencies to catch children up on immunizations by delivering services where the children were. In the fall of 2020, Super Shot traveled to over 90 separate schools and agencies providing more than 10,000 children a flu shot and catch-up immunizations. This provided ease and needed access to families during the pandemic and helped get community immunization rates back on track. And, because of COVID-19, reducing the spread of respiratory illnesses, like flu, was more important than ever to help reduce the strain on our local healthcare system and to keep the entire community healthy.
